During this period all railway carriages were oil-lit when built, but over time most of them were converted either to gas (with gas tanks fitted under the floor â highly dangerous in the event of an accident, increasing the risk of fire) or the LBSCRâs pioneering system of electric lighting. In 1881 William Stroudley fitted incandescent electric lighting to the stock used for the âPullman Limited Expressâ, which became the first electrically lit train to run anywhere in the world. However, good though the system was, it was soon decided that the use of dynamos run from the carriage axles would be preferable to charging the batteries each time the train arrived at the end of its journey. A change of working practice meant that only the brake coaches and vans had batteries and dynamos. The batteries were moved inside the body of the coach rather than beneath. In this method of working the electricity was supplied to the other coaches in the train from the brake via electric cables. The âPullman Limited Expressâ service made two down and two up trips each day, with one trip each way on Sundays. Then, in 1887, the service was renamed the âBrighton Pullman Limitedâ, when First-class cars were included in the trainâs formation.
This sign was once fitted to the wall in the far end vestibule of Pullman Car Albert Edward as is seen in the previous image. It was quite fortuitously removed from the Car in the 1960s, as soon afterwards this Pullman gem was set alight by vandals. Although the fire was quickly put out by the fire brigade, the car was subsequently broken up. Thankfully this sign now forms part of the authorâs collection. (Author)
